Glasgow Inspirations for The Proximity Effect

Laki Mera’s LAURA DONNELLY is a multi-faceted Glasgow artist.  Not only does she write the beautiful lyrics that she sings as the lead vocalist in the band,  she also paints, is an accomplished photographer and designed the artwork for the cover of their latest album ‘The Proximity Effect’. Her time as a textile design student at the Glasgow School of Art continues to inspire her music…

"We have all been drawn to Glasgow as a culturally rich and inspiring city in which to settle and cast some roots. The sometimes harsh, dark climate alongside the warmth of bustling city life have a massive impact on the music we write.

I’ve recently been thinking of how Glasgow has influenced me personally and I keep coming back to my time spent at the Glasgow School of Art. I studied Textile Design some years ago (a decade to be precise!) and some of what I learned and the influences I explored at the time have stayed with me.

Music and art/design have always been intrinsically linked, with one influencing the other. In my final project there, I drew inspiration from the shapes of sound waves and the graphics made by recording software. Whilst at art school I specialised in weaving. The loom room was on the top floor of a 1970s, 8-storey tower with amazing views over the city.

The looms themselves were big, old, rickety machines of wood and metal on which you could weave the most delicate fabrics with the most intricate designs. To operate the looms you had to lose yourself in a repetition of physical movements, creating a rhythm of the most amazing clunking, metallic sounds.

When it came to working on The Proximity Effect, Andrea and I went back to the weave room with some recording equipment to capture some of those sounds. I was glad to re-visit the place and finally get these sounds ‘on tape’, albeit quite a long time later. Andrea then developed the sound samples and worked them into a beat. Listen carefully and you can hear them on ‘The Beginning of the End’.”
